A BJP delegation will visit the enclaves in Coochbehar and Jalpaiguri districts in the state on December 16. After a high-level meeting with External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid late Tuesday evening, the state unit of BJP decided to collect data and see the actual situation at the enclaves in Bengal.
"A meeting was held with with the Union External Minister Salman Khurshid in presence of a central BJP delegation, including senior party leaders Lal Krishna Advani, Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley. The UPA needs our support to pass the enclave exchange bill in Parliament. Our party also wants the long standing issue on enclaves to be resolved and that the relation between India and Bangladesh to be improved. But we have to see the actual condition and look into the matter before voting for the bill," said Rahul Sinha, president of Bengal unit of BJP.
Sinha will lead a delegation to Coochbehar where the maximum number of Bangladeshi enclaves exist. "We will prepare a report after visiting the enclaves and submit it to the party. The BJP wants better relations with Bangladesh, but before handing over the enclaves to the neighbours, a census should be made of the people residing there and ask them which country's citizenship they will take," Sinha added.
