BJP favours Raja appearing before JPC

The BJP on Tuesday demanded that the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) looking into the 2G spectrum allocation case agree to former Telecom minister A Raja's request of appearing before it.

"It is eminently reasonable request by one of the principal players in this issue. He (Raja) has made a reasonable demand and it should be agreed to. If he is not asked to appear, the JPC will have no meaning," BJP leader and JPC member Yashwant Sinha said on Tuesday. The BJP leader, in this context, sought to mount pressure on JPC Chairman P C Chacko, saying that a decision regarding Raja's deposition will not be that of one person's. "It is not going to be one person's decision, the JPC will decide it in its meeting," Sinha responded to queries regarding P C Chacko's opinion.

Chacko on Tuesday maintained that a decision will be taken by the JPC in its next meeting. But this is likely to divide the JPC with opposition members from the BJP and Left parties likely to use Raja's deposition to mount pressure on Chacko to get the Finance Minister and the Prime Minister also depose before it.

Sinha, in fact, signalled that the JPC will have to "subsequently" decide on whom to call for further inquiry.
