Seeking to make Varun Gandhi's detention under NSA a major poll issue, BJP has constituted a panel led by its former president M Venkaiah Naidu to assess the situation on the ground and report back to its top leadership.

A special meeting of the office bearers have also been convened on Friday to discuss the situation.

According to sources, Singh has deputed Naidu and UP BJP chief Ramapathi Tripathi to visit Gandhi in Etah jail on Thursday.

Naidu and Tripathi would be presenting a detailed report on the situation after talking to Gandhi and the local leadership, sources added.

The report would be discussed at a meeting of the office bearers of the party convened by Singh on Friday. "The meeting would chalk out the future strategy of the party vis-a-vis Varun Gandhi. It is also aimed at presenting a uniform view among the top leadership on the issue," said a senior party leader.

"I can only say that the UPA and Mayawati government should stop playing with fire. Imposing NSA while the charges have been denied by Varun Gandhi himself is unjustified. The veracity of the tapes should be established," party chief Rajnath Singh told reporters in Raipur on Wednesday.

I can only say at this point of time that all "options are open for the party. The government should make proper arrangement for ensuring security of Varun Gandhi," Singh said declining to comment whether the party would provide legal support.

The BJP candidate from Pilibhit, booked under National Security Act for his hate speeches, has been shifted to a high-security Etah jail following intelligence inputs that underworld don Chota Shakeel was hatching a conspiracy to kill him.

Congress a threatBy: GPaul | 01-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward A convicted terrorist Madani in Kerala is a poll partner of CPM - but nom advice from EC - what a shame. Shahi Imam, Mufi Muhammed have spewed venom against India but no NSA was invoked. Shahi Imam had once boycotted India's independence day - but still he is welcomed by the Congress President with folded hands. Congress is a biggest threat for India's security. Congress should be ousted in this election.
FOUNTAIN HEAD OF FANATICISMBy: Sundar | 01-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward The title is most appropriate. Yes, the BJP is for milking this Varun issue to the maximum. Never mind about the danger it is causing to the communal harmony in this Country. What more can you expect from a Party which canvassed for a construction of a Temple and this is despite taking oath under a secular Constitution thereby going against its very principles. Advani was the fountainhead of Hindu fundamentalism in this Country and it was his Rath yatra which ended in gory and death all over the Country and the effects which we are facing today in the form of religious terrorism is the trickling in of the adverse effects of this issue. Even the Godhra riots were only intricately related to this issue. It is most important that the public shun such communal politics which are practised just for developing vote banks and realize the imminent danger of disintegration.
Catch 22 for Varun supportersBy: Ratnesh | 01-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward If Varun Gandhi said what is contained in the CD, then he is a chicken hearted guy to now deny it. Can such a person protect Hindus against anyone? No. If he did not say what is contained in the CD, then he is not a protector of the Hindus that he is being made out to be. So either way, Varun Gandhi does not deserve any great respect or attention. It is a pity that the hottest current election story in the world's biggest election is a complete non-issue.
why such a baised headline?By: Keith George | 01-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Online Editor,I wish to ask you wheather your paper is indeed an impartial publication or do you (too) perform servility towards any political party.Your suggestive headline (..BJP "milks"..) seems to suggest an underlying and implied negativeness towards the BJP. May i suggest that a respected papers as yours refrain from formulating the readers views and kindly keep any understaed assumptions within your editorial room please? And in continuation, may i also provide some more headlines, in line with the subject discussion?CPI "milks" the opportunity to garner muslim votes by its support of the Abdul Nasser Madani who spent over 10 years in jail as an accused in a terrorist case.BSP "milks" the chance to garner criminal votes by fielding Mukhtar Ansari who is facing over two dozen criminal cases including those of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, extortion, loot and land grabbing.Congress "milks" black money of gangsters by having Taslimudin as minister
