BJP obfuscating facts to save Modi govt: Cong

Lokayukta shall be appointed by Gov in consultation with HC CJ and Leader of Opposition: Act.

Angry over BJP’s raising a storm in Parliament over the Gujarat Lokayukta issue,Congress today hit back saying the Opposition party was “misleading” people and “obfuscating” facts to save Narendra Modi’s “corrupt deeds”.

Seeking to demolish BJP’s arguments, party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the Lokayukta Act of Gujarat has no role for the Chief Minister or the Council of Ministers.

“The Act says that Lokayukta shall be appointed by the Governor in consultation with the High Court Chief Justice and the Leader of Opposition,” he said questioning the locus standi of the Modi government to object the Lokayukta appointment.Singhvi also dismissed as “utter falsehood” and an “over-clever” method to mislead people the argument by Arun Jaitley that the Governor’s act of notifying the appointment of Lokayukta without taking the aid and advice is a violation of federal structure of the country.

“The Modi government in Gujarat is trying to avoid Lokayuta’s appointment and indeed more worse is that he is trying to get appointee of his choice. Why is this sudden opposition only to protect Modi and his corrupt deeds,” Singhvi said.

He said as long as the Act under which appointments have been made by the Governor since 1986 is in force, this cannot be opposed. Singhvi also attacked the BJP for disrupting Parliament over the issue and questioned the need for such a move when the Gujarat government has already approached the High Court in the matter.

“BJP is unfortunately up to its antics again. These antics prove the Opposition party’s hypocrisy, duplicity and irresponsibility,”Singhvi said.
