The Opposition BJP in the Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JMC) has opposed the ruling Congress’ move to buy a new car for the mayor. BJP legislator and Leader of the Opposition Mahendra Mashru resorted to an agitation on Tuesday in this regard.
Mashru and other BJP councillors stuck black ribbon on their shoulders, while Mashru himself opposed the move by standing on one feet when the JMC Standing Committee meeting was in process, between 11.30 am and 1 pm, in the JMC Meeting Hall.
Mashru said: “Instead of buying a costly car for the mayor, the ruling Congress should buy two ambulances which will help the people. The Congress is wasting public money.”
He added: “Our work is to create public awareness and we will do so by opposing this move. The Congress should utilise the money for development work. Our duty is to safeguard the larger public interest.”
JMC Mayor Satish Captain said: “The vehicle is pretty old and has already travelled over two lakh kilometres. After receiving the technical experts’ reports, a decision was taken to buy a new vehicle.”
Girish Kotecha, Deputy Mayor, said: “The BJP has no noteworthy issue. Mashru is a habitual opponent. He should rather oppose the corruptions and malpractice that have taken place during the BJP’s rule in the JMC.”
