Amid Congress protests against the presence of actor Amitabh Bachchan at a Marathi literary event in Pune and the BJP lambasting the Congress for “forcibly” removing posters of Abhishek Bachchan at Saturday’s “Earth Hour” function in the Capital,BJP’s VK Malhotra has suggested that Bachchan senior be made the main ambassador for the Commonwealth Games.

Malhotra, the Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, who is also the Indian Olympic Association senior vice-president and the executive board member of the Games organising committee, has written to Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi on the subject.

In the letter, sent on Saturday,he wrote that given the Bollywood superstar’s credentials and star status,he would be the best choice. Bachchan is already the brand ambassador of BJP-ruled Gujarat.

So far,the organising committee has announced the names of actor Aamir Khan and poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar as brand ambassadors for the Games.

“The Commonwealth Games is going to be an important milestone in the history of contemporary India,” Malhotra wrote.

“It will not only showcase our sporting talent but also (our) social and cultural heritage. In this regard, the appointment of the brand ambassador is going to be crucial because they will be looked upon as the best and brightest of the country,” Malhotra wrote.

“I suggest Shri Amitabh Bachchan be appointed as the main brand ambassador of Commonwealth Games. (He) represents (the) best of India’s mid-age generation and is an icon for the youngsters. He was the brand ambassador of the 1982 Delhi Asiad and I strongly feel Bachchan should be given this honour again.”

He added that the organising committee should induct only those who are willing to do the job without any monetary interest.

“The brand ambassadors should be proud of being given the job and should do it in the national interest and not for money,” he wrote.

The Bachchan family has lately been caught in a storm of controversies over brand ambassadorship.Bachchan senior recently felt slighted after the Kerala government turned down the move to take him on board as the brand ambassador for tourism in the state. He also expressed his anger on his blog about his son Abhishek being left out of the Earth Hour event organised by WWF,in collaboration with the Sheila Dikshit-led Delhi government.

Abhishek, meanwhile, tweeted about his absence from the event, attributing it to “prior commitments”.
