BJP says Ramesh’s steely resolve on environment ‘melts’ abroad

BJP alleged that Ramesh had also backtracked from his promise in Parl on the Kyoto Protocol and the issue of climate change.

BJP on Friday took potshots at Union Minister Jairam Ramesh over his objections to a township being built near the Mundra Port in Gujarat for alleged violation of environmental norms and said his “steely resolve” at home melts when he goes abroad.

“Ramesh shows such steely resolve and strictness here but this melts when he goes abroad and he becomes so soft on India’s concerns,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

The senior BJP leader was alluding to Ramesh’s alleged deviation from India’s stated position during the recent Cancun conference on Climate change.

Prasad alleged that Ramesh had also backtracked from his promise in Parliament on the Kyoto Protocol and the issue of climate change.

He questioned this “metamorphosis” of Ramesh from a strict Environment and Forest Minister in India to a “soft one” abroad.

Prasad said a detailed response to Ramesh’s objections on the Samundra township coming up in Gujarat would be given by the state government.

The Environment Ministry has sent a show-cause notice to the builders of the township and raised a number of objections on the construction work going on at the port.
