The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha have decided to forge an alliance and contest the West Bengal Assembly polls together.
Announcing the alliance,BJP state president Rahul Sinha said they were looking at a non-Left,non-Congress-Trinamool Congress front in the state. We had a series of meetings with JMM leaders and decided to contest elections together. The decision on seat-sharing will be announced in the next few days. Polling in Junglemahal area,where the JMM is strong,will be held in the final phase, Sinha said.
The BJP and JMM are running the Jharkhand government together. Arjun Munda,the Chief Minister of Jharkhand,also had discussions with BJP leaders about the tie-up in Bengal.
We are running the government together in Jharkhand. We feel that an alliance with the BJP will help us win some seats in the state, said Paresh Marandy,the state president of JMM. Marandy added that the party had a strong influence in Purulia,Bankura and parts of West Midnapore. Sinha said that alliance talks were on with groups such as Adivasi Vikas Parishad and Kamtapur Peoples Party. Asked about an alliance with Janata Dal (United),Sinha said that senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley had spoken to JD(U) president Sharad Yadav and the party was hopeful about a tie-up.
