  • There are more than 48 polling stations in the Capital where the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) procured less than 50 votes during both the Lok Sabha and the Delhi Assembly elections last year. As the BJP’s Delhi unit launches its membership drive, they plan to concentrate on these polling stations in particular to ensure a better performance next election.

The Delhi BJP claims to have eight lakh registered members in Delhi. The membership is renewed every six years. The drive will continue till September 30.

During the election season, the Delhi BJP unit had failed to trace most of the eight lakh members registered on paper. Most these members were later found to be fake.

“It came to our notice that most of these names registered with us did not exist. The registrations were shown on paper merely to complete numbers,” said a senior BJP leader.

For the drive, the BJP has set up three-level committees, the lowest rung being the polling station level, which means the work is being done at 11,350 polling stations. “We are stressing on quality rather than quantity this time. We are handing out one form at a time and every piece of information on the forms — phone numbers, addresses etc, will be recorded in our database,” said Satish Upadhaya, general secretary of BJP, who is heading the drive.

The other areas the BJP is concentrating on are voters between 18 to 25 years of age and Below Poverty Line (BPL) card-holders. “We will organise out our drive at youth clubs through meetings. This time we will also try to extend our membership to colonies that house a majority of BPL card holders.
