  • He fielded over 40 questions from more than 250 journalists — watched by TV cameras too many to count. Virtually all these questions had to do with the mess in the BJP.

And RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat tackled these questions with variations of just one answer: BJP has to sort out its mess, we are here to advise, not interfere.

This was his fourth press conference after being appointed chief last year — his first in the capital. The RSS top brass were in attendance and spokesperson Ram Madhav played Master of Ceremonies.

Behind Bhagwat’s deceptive nonchalance, the message was there for all to read.

Asked about the state of the BJP, he made it clear that the RSS would “advise the BJP, as swayamsevaks, whenever asked”, admitting that “I have said whatever I had to, to Rajnath Singhji, now it is for the party to decide and do.”

Answering another question: “We have neither the time nor icchha to do what you are calling backseat driving, yeh sab bahut maatha pacchi ka kaam hai...”

He even added helpfully, that when “given a list of 50 names and asked for our advice on who should be the leader, we will give that advice when asked.”

Fiesty and combative, a very political Bhagwat took no obvious potshots at the BJP unlike what his predecessor K Sudershan has done in the past (when he openly hit out at Atal Behari Vajpayee and Advani when the BJP had lost in 2004) nor did Bhagwat shy away from facing the media, like his other predecessors, Rajju Bhaiyya and even the long-serving Balasaheb Deoras.

    ... contd.

BJP MessBy: S. Vatsya | 30-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward The present state of affair in BJP leeds me to believe that RSS is not what it used to be. I do not now see as much RSS activities as used to be there in sixtees. It is difficult to support Jaswant Singh as he is not supporting an India with strong central Govt. an aspiration of all nationalists. on the other hand Advani's lust for power has made him a laughing stock and he has lost the respect of entire nation. Now it is clear he is there just to enjoy facilities associated with the post.
AwesomeBy: Rohit | 29-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Most remarkable event of recent times. Great read. I love RSS.
THEY HAVE MADE THEMSELVES A LAUGHING STOCKBy: R Sundar | 29-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward The BJP leaders have made themselves a laughing stock by such ceaseless infighting with one trying to dig hole for another. The irony of all these is that this was a Party which projected a senile and old man as its PM candidate and asked the Citizens to vote for a decisive Government. Now, from the infighting we are all witness to what kind of decisiveness the BJP can offer. The problem in the BJP is trying to fix accountability for the defeat. While Vasundara and Khanduri are being targeted for electoral defeats on the one end, the likes of Arun Jaitley and Advani are rewarded in the other end. This makes a mockery of fixing accountability. With no solution in sight, the BJP is in a road to nowhere and might be relegated to a fringe party status like it was till 1989 when the Mandir issue came to their rescue.
ConfirmationBy: Kes | 29-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward The interview was a confirmation that RSS is as clueless as the BJP.
Reply to KesBy: Ananth Seth | 29-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Kes ji (whatever it means), try to read between lines and hear between words.
BJP worker came to meBy: peshori ahuja | 29-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward As if what has been coming in the press was not enough, BJP has turned to RSS for advice. To the best of our knowledge, RSS is a social organization and BJP is a political party.BJP that wishes to run the Govt. should be able to decide by themselves as to what is good or what is bad for the country.Going to RSS shows hollowness of their administrative skill. Dear BJP, the days are gone when a person not with an all round knowledge could lead a country. The president of a political party should be so read and knoledgable that he/she could advise others and not seek of advice of others. Through this message, if ever it goes through, we would request the you, the BJP, to take urgent steps to eradicate things that caused BJP's stunning defeat.WE are still at a loss to understand as to on what basis Rajnath Singh said "mein samajhta hoon key BJP teen so sey ziada seatoon par jeetey gi".May god bless BJP and give SAT BUDHI TO ITS LEADERS.
What does it mean?By: Rajesh | 29-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward So the party president should be a superman..? Is he should not take any advice? Or others should be afraid to give any advice?..It might be seen only in congress...and only if other leaders and workers are slaves...
