A group of curious Rajasthani women waited impatiently in the sweltering afternoon heat as Meera Kanwarias sister tried to set the stage for a campaign speech.
The women, with their sarees drawn over their faces in traditional style, were not impressed with the promise of development and better amenities and demanded to know if the BJP candidate from Northwest Delhi would actually be able to rid their homes of alcoholic men by banning illegal liquor shops.
While this proved to be a tough question and was evaded, party workers filled the pause with slogans.
Kanwaria, who had already had a long day visiting Narela,Sindhi Colony in Swaroop Nagar, the Rajeev Nagar Community Centre,Libaspur and Siraspur, arrived an hour late for her afternoon campaign at Mongolpuri, where she was hoping to convince the dominant Rajasthani population.
Being a woman from your community, she will work for you and try to resolve your problems in a better way. So convince your family members and neighbours to vote for her and bring a change in your area, Kanwarias sister said.
When Kanwaria walked in,the women, who had chosen to miss their TV serials and make for a full house audience in the locality field, were curious to hear her. But the excitement soon faded as party workers got garlands and goaded the women to felicitate Kanwaria over and over again. While some were happy to be photographed with her, others were looking forward to hearing her speech.
The issues of ration and BPL cards not being made, pension, ownership of plots not being given to residents, and water, however, didnt quite help Kanwaria hit it off with the audience. We might have left the deserts of Rajasthan and come to the Capital but the problem of water availability is still plaguing us, Kanwaria said in fluent Rajasthani for a personal touch.
Though the women nodded in agreement on this issue, the ration card problem didnt find many takers. So much so that a few women at the back even retorted that they were getting their ration well in time.
The women, mostly from traditionally Congress-backing families, were not convinced but chose to stay back for the free meal and even called their children over for a late lunch.
