BJP’s mangalsutra distribution comes under EC scanner

The BJP’s move to distribute mangalsutras among the women electorate as part of its poll campaign has come under the scanner of the Election Commission.

The BJP’s move to distribute mangalsutras among the women electorate as part of its poll campaign has come under the scanner of the Election Commission. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has raised objections to this “marriage of convenience”.

Officials at the Chief Electoral Office said CEO Anita Karwal has asked some district electoral officers to inquire into the distribution of the mangalsutras.

“The Election Commission of India (EC) ruling allows caps, scarves and bindis for candidates and team members. Mangalsutra does not fall in this category. Apart from these three items, anything costing over Rs 10 is a violation of the poll code,” said an official.

The official added: “The CEO wants to ascertain how much these mangalsutras cost. If it costs more than Rs 10,it will be a serious violation of the Model Code of Conduct.”

The storekeeper at the BJP office,Chandrakant Hingu, who claims to be the brain behind the distribution of the mangalsutras with a lotus pendant, said: “Lotus is visible everywhere. Goddess Laxmi is also seen on a lotus. Can anyone say it is violation of the poll code?” He added: “It was in great demand and was made for the party members. We don’t have any mangalsutras left with us… One piece costs us Rs 20.”

The CEO is,meanwhile, yet to decide whether using cows for election campaign is a violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

The BJP in Vadodara had draped cows with the party banner.
