To foil escape bids during anti-terror operations, the National Security Guard (NSG) plans to deploy German Shepherd dogs or Alsatians in outer security cordons of areas where such operations are underway. These dogs will also be used in offensive operations like room-busting.

Bholu, the first of four German Shepherd being acquired by the NSG, has already been inducted into the force. His skills in foiling an escape bid were on full display today at the 25th Raising Day celebrations of the NSG.

NSG’s K9 (for canine) Dog Handling Unit will also raise a team of Labradors who will carry head-mounted cameras to assist the Black Cats in search operations. This idea, sources said, is a key learning from the 26/11 Mumbai operations where Black Cats had to break into rooms and areas with minimum information.

“We will get eight more Labradors soon. We have plans to train them with head-mounted cameras. They can be sent into an operations zone and beam live images,” sources said.

The NSG is also training two Cocker Spaniels — Casper and Bruno — to conduct search operations inside aircraft. Both dogs have been under training for four months.
