Black money: Govt linked to account holders, says Gadkari

BJP president Nitin Gadkari reiterated that the government was not keen on disclosing the names.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday reiterated that the government was not keen on disclosing the names of those who have Swiss bank accounts as it was afraid of getting involved in the scandal.

“Last night I was watching TV and I saw everyone asking the same question,” he told reporters here. “Why would national interest get damaged if names of the people dealing in black money were to be divulged? How does national interest play a part in this? Tomorrow if somebody steals and their name is made public, how is national interest damaged?”

Gadkari said he had proof of the government’s involvement in the money trail.

The BJP president also took on the UPA for defending the appointment of P J Thomas as Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC). “The CVC is a sensitive post. It plays a role in the appointment of CBI director and others. Should there not be an impartial, fair and judicious person holding that post?”

Gadkari objected to the Centre’s affidavit that it was not necessary to consult the Leader of Opposition for appointment of the CVC. “Despite Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj giving a dissent note, the government appointed Thomas. If her view was not necessary, why was she invited? The Congress does not believe in a democratic system,” he added.
