BMC may employ donkeys to clean Worli Chowpatty

With Worli Chowpatty too dirty for human contact, BMC might rope in donkeys to clean the area.

Mayor Sunil Prabhu said Friday if people were unable to reach the area, the beasts of burden will be employed to carry debris and dirt from the shore to a place from where it can be shifted to dumps.

Corporator Hemangi Warlikar has been pursuing the issue for months. "Earlier, the throat beach at Worli Koliwada had a shore. Now, there's just debris from building constructions. With so much filth, it is a health hazard for people living in the vicinity," she said.

The cleaning of the area is expected to begin soon. "If the area is too dirty for humans, donkeys will do the work, but it needs to be done within the next eight days," said Prabhu.

Some officials said donkeys had been employed earlier as well. "Certain suburbs have been cleaned using this method. Rail tracks are also cleaned in a similar fashion," said a BMC official.
