BMC project to improve garbage clearance

The civic administration launched the 'Swach Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan' on Wednesday, coinciding with the birth anniversary of the late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

Actor Amitabh Bachchan kicked off the Rs 95-crore project to enhance garbage clearance.

"It is good that such an initiative has been taken by the civic body to ensure cleanliness across the city. We must come together to contribute to the city's development to make sure our nation is called a 'developed nation' rather than 'developing nation'," said Bachchan at the event in the Mayor's bungalow in Dadar.

The scheme aims at garbage collection, cleaning of small drains and public toilets.

"We will ensure more citizen participation. A budgetary provision of Rs 95 crore has been made and will be implemented in the next 14 months," said Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)Commissioner Sitaram Kunte at the event.

The work of garbage collection and cleaning of smaller drains will be given to NGOs on a monthly basis, and their performance will be rated to ensure quality, said an official.

After complaints of poor garbage collection in areas not under the civic administration, the BMC has decided to cover all areas and clear garbage from MbPT, MHADA and PWD colonies as well.

The BMC has also announced extending the virtual classroom facility to 400 more schools.

The civic administration plans to attract more students and improve Class 10 pass percentage by roping in teachers of reputed civic schools for the virtual classroom project in which teachers will address students and interact with them from a central studio in Andheri.

The project was launched to combat shortage of good teachers at civic schools.
