The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has declined the MMRDAs proposal to alter the reservation of a plot in Vikhroli for the purpose of Metro Rail car shed and a station, along with some commercial space.
The 38-hectare land owned by Godrej is reserved as per the Development Plan for a permanent exhibition centre. The civic body has said it is willing to delete the reservation and change it to build a Metro station and a car shed but will not do so for any commercial exploitation.
Improvements Committee chairman Bhalchandra Shirsat said the proposal does not clearly state the break-up of land for each specific use.
Is 38 hectares required for the station and car shed? If a majority of the land is for station and car shed,we are not against dereserving, but if the majority is being de-reserved for commercial exploitation,we will not give our permission. We will discuss the issue again when MMRDA comes with proper details on what the land is being used for, said Shirsat.
Another member of the committee,Manoj Kotak, said the entire city has only one reservation for an exhibition centre. We cannot do away with the reservation so easily without knowing the finer details of how this land is going to be used, said Kotak.
MMRDA Commissioner Rahul Asthana said the commercial exploitation of land is desired so that the financial burden of the mega project can be eased.
However,BMC is the final deciding authority. If it wants to de-reserve only that portion of land which has the station and the car shed,we will have no option but to accept the decision, said Asthana.
