BMCs disaster management course awaits nod from university council

The disaster management course proposed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the Mumbai University around two years ago has been delayed again with the civic body waiting for the university academic councils nod. The council is yet to be formed.
The BMC and the university jointly proposed the PG Diploma in Disaster Management in January 2009. The course was supposed to start in 2010-11. Chief disaster management officer Mahesh Narvekar said the Parel building where the classes will be held is ready. The academic council needs to give us a formal go ahead. We hope that the approval comes soon so that we can start the admission process otherwise the course will get delayed for yet another academic year, said Narvekar.
An official from Mumbai University said with the senate elections over,the academic council will be formed soon. A panel of lecturers from the universitys geography and psychology departments,along with officials from the disaster management cell of the BMC,jointly formulated the syllabus for the year-long post graduate course. The first few batches will comprise personnel such as firemen,disaster management officials,policemen among others. Later,the course will be open to graduates. The course will be affiliated to Mumbai University and will be conducted at the BMCs City Institute of Disaster Management in Parel. It will deal with 35 types of natural and man-made disasters as defined by the Central governments National Disaster Management Academy. It will have six papers with specialised subjects like Urban Disaster Management that will deal with disasters specific to cities.
The course will be both practical and theoretical. The centre will be equipped to replicate disaster situations. There will be an earthquake stimulator that will recreate earthquake measuring 1-10 on the Richter scale, Narvekar added.
