Colleges to come up with own merit lists
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has decided to do away with the toppers list of the HSC and the SSC examinations from this year. Toppers belonging to six categories, including state and divisional toppers, will not be announced.
However, the city colleges have decided to come up with their own merit lists of college toppers.
The Board will not declare the first three state toppers, the top three scorers in each of the eight divisions, two toppers in arts, science, commerce and the minimum competency vocational courses (MCVC),the top two scorers among girls, the SC-ST category, the night school and from the handicapped category from this year. Only subject toppers will be declared, said Vijaysheela Sardesai, chairperson,MSBSHSE said in a press meet on Tuesday.
The state board discontinued publishing the merit list, but went on to announce top scorers till last year. The Board had faced criticism about announcing top scorers. Hence, only subject toppers would be announced from this year, Sardesai said.
She added that this years list of subject toppers would be declared on Monday,May 31.
Sardesai said that the decision not to announce toppers would reduce the unnecessary pressure on students. We have continued to announce subject toppers to encourage students to excel in suhjects they are interested in, she said. A similar pattern will be followed for SSC results.
Rekha Palshikar,vice-principal,Fergusson Junior College, was, however, not very happy with the Boards decision to do away with the toppers list. Students who had expected to see their names in the merit list are disappointed. Also,it has become difficult for colleges to analyse the results and find out how many of their students have topped, she said.
The Board had requested donors who had constituted prizes for merit holders to award the prize money to subject-wise toppers. The prizes for subject toppers will be given after June, when the re-evaluation of papers is carried out.
Regarding the college merit lists,Palshikar said the college will come out with its internal merit list soon. Teachers from both Arts and Science faculties are compiling the merit list. Since the results can only be obtained by entering the number of individual students on the website,it will take some time, she said. Palshikar added that they are also waiting for the Board to issue marksheets to verify the same. We shall felicitate the top 10 students from both the faculties, she said.
Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce too will begin compilation of its merit list after May 31. Analysis of marks has not begun yet but we will do so once the State Board gives us the complete list on May 31, said college principal Hrishikesh Soman.
Soman was happy that the State Board has finally scrapped the merit list system. It would always create a definite divide among the students with parents and teachers pressurising students to outperform, he said.
