People stranded in their houses or roof tops were fleeced by people who came to rescue them.

Natural calamities have traditionally been known to bring out the most humanitarian instincts in people. However, in a disturbing series of reports from Kurnool, people stranded in their houses or roof tops were fleeced by people who came to rescue them in the guise of good Samaritans.

The complaints of people being asked to pay exorbitant prices to be rescued became so rampant that a shocked district administration sought the government’s help to get more mechanised boats and dinghies to reach the affected areas.

K Suresh who runs an advertising agency in Kurnool said that people coming into the flood-affected areas in ‘puttis’ (small row boats) in the guise of good Samaritans actually struck bargains with people standing in chest deep water or hanging from trees or rooftops, to be rescued.

“They took whatever gold ornaments a person was wearing to offer a boat ride to safety. They even took away the ‘mangalsutras’ of terrified women caught in the swirling waters, others gave away their gold chains, bangles or ear rings to be rescued,” Suresh said.

Kurnool SP C Shrikant said several private boat owners and heavy vehicle drivers who could venture into the flooded old town of Kurnool fleeced stranded people of their gold and jewellery.

“The district administration and police machinery was overwhelmed by the fury of the flood. In certain parts of the old town the water levels had reached 21 feet. People had taken shelter on rooftops or high floors of highrise buildings. We have received several complaints that some people in row boats charged hefty amounts or took gold chains, bangles or ear rings to rescue people stranded in the flood waters. Those who could not pay were apparently abandoned to their fate,” he added.

reward for saving lifeBy: suri | 08-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward if someone is saving before governments help by risking thier own life, there is not point in blaming. life is worthier than gold. Just it encourages them to save more lives. Exception is this greed should not reach leaving someone behind without help just because he/she has no gold and costing life. In this world no one feed beggers, so why should he work for free???

As the king so the peopleBy: Eswar | 07-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Yatha Raja thatha Praja! As the king so the people they say is very true in this case in AP .YSR looted the public money and distributed freely to his kith, kin and to his constutients and the result was he was revered like a God and even the name of Kadappa was changed to YSR .He has also shown the way how to loot the public money and now his followers are just executing his strategy by looting the hapless victims of calamity by even snatching the Managal Sutra.Well AP has progressed very well in this sphere. They will become a model for rest of the country.
PatheticBy: rao | 07-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward It is pathetic that we now have no human (and humanitarian) values. It is no secret that even the central and state administration and the politicians vie to pocket whatever they can in the name of this aid.God knows how much of any aid money actually reaches the deserving (wouldn't be surprised if the figure is at the most 10%). Shame on us, the private and state machineries, who plunder in the name of help.Disgusting that people can stoop to such low levels.
All wrong happening, it tis the KaliyugBy: Sajjan Pandit | 07-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Karnataka and Andhra were decent places of high moral values, or so I thought. All are now following our politicians and getting corrupt and opportunitists. Something is already wrong in our present upbringing. When the unwanted come, they bring malafide intentions and looters' mentality with them. No care for local culture. Very soon it takes a stronghold and spreads outwards (also back to where they came from) because we are no more taught real meaning of karma but how fast to make it big/rich/publicised by hook or crook. All morals crumble in front of such an onslaught. Then we have this scenario. We in Maharashtra are already under this deluge. It is going everywhere, it seems.
