Bombardier Transportation and National Institute of Design (NID) will have a hand in shaping the look and new technology for suburban Mumbai trains that will be manufactured by the Railways starting from next year.

While some of the key equipment will be provided by Bombardier’s Vadodara plants, the exteriors colour scheme for the trains has been designed by the NID,Ahmedabad.

Last year the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) had signed a contract with Bombardier Transportation worth over Rs 1,000 crore for the supply of equipment to manufacture Electric Multiple Unit rakes under the Phase 2A of Mumbai Urban Transport Project.

Bombardier has recently announced that it will complete order relating to a total of 72 commuter trains of 12 cars each to MRVC in the last quarter of 2012,with completion of deliveries in the third quarter of 2014.
