Booked for attempting to bribe a high court judge, Additional Advocate General (Haryana) Sanjeev Bansal has resigned from his post. However, he continues to be missing, with the Chandigarh police unable to track him down.
Bansal tendered his resignation to the office of the Advocate General on August 16 on moral grounds, saying that since a case of corruption and criminal conspiracy had been registered against him, he would step down till he was cleared. The resignation has been forwarded to the Haryana Government by the Advocate General’s office.
Bansal was booked on Saturday along with two others — his munshi Parkash Raj and Delhi-based businessman Ravinder Singh. Raj is reported to have carried Rs 15 lakh to the residence of Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Nirmaljit Kaur on Wednesday night. An FIR was lodged after Kaur complained to the police. She also reported the matter to the Chief Justice.
Police said Singh had allegedly paid Bansal a huge amount to get a criminal case pending in the High Court settled. Earlier, Singh had claimed the amount was pertaining to a property deal he had struck with a resident of Panchkula. He said it was supposed to be delivered to one Nirmal Singh and was mistakenly sent to the judge’s house. Preliminary investigation by the police, however, ruled out the possibility of the amount being related to any property deal.
While Bansal remains missing, Raj who is in police custody is reportedly not cooperating. Bansal has been handling several high-profile cases in the state. He was one of the dozen-odd Additional A-G’s appointed by the Haryana Government about two years ago.
