  • For Gopal Shetty, BJP Mumbai region president and second-term MLA from Borivali, the development of his constituency should begin with the modernisation of its railway station with world class amenities. The 55-year-old had earlier been the BMC corporator from Borivali thrice.

“The recent modifications in the Development Control Rules have brought about rapid development in Borivali but the station is old, built during the British raj. I want to see the station with better and wider footbridges, even platforms and proper sanitation facilities. I am seeking the help of MP Sanjay Nirupam for the same,” Shetty said.

In terms of health, Shetty feels the BMC-run Bhagwati Hospital in Borivali is not adequate and wants to build a hospital that can cater to the middle and upper middle classes. “Beyond Nanavati Hospital, there is no big enough private hospital till Virar. I have identified a plot near Kora Kendra, where a 400-bedded hospital will be built on a public-private partnership basis.”

Shetty also plans a private college for Arts, Science, Commerce and Engineering spread over a five-lakh sq ft area. “The construction is nearing completion and classes will commence from next academic year. Also, my focus would be to get the state to regulate the unchecked fee hikes in private schools and colleges.”

Shetty has also promised to set up a public library in Borivali West.

On the traffic situation, Shetty said, “The skywalk outside the station built during my last term will be completed soon and will ease traffic near the station. I have been responsible for concretisation and widening of many roads in Borivali. As an MLA, I will press for the urgent completion of metro and monorail to ease the pressure off roads.” Shetty feels the project-affected persons should be rehabilitated within nearby areas of their original residence. “Delays in such huge projects lead to cost escalations and continued inconvenience to 90 per cent of citizens.”

    ... contd.
