Clearly embarrassed about side-stepping the domestic framework and allowing bowlers figuring in BCCI’s list of players with suspect actions to play in the IPL, the tournament’s governing council is expected to insert a no-tolerance clause on the franchises.

According to sources, bowlers who will figure in BCCI’s list next year will not be allowed to take up a contract or, in case of part-timers, will not be allowed to bowl in the tournament.

Rajasthan Royals bowler Amit Singh, who has figured on the list of suspect actions for two consecutive years, was allowed to play because of a technical loophole of a two-week window for hearing an appeal, and then provisionally cleared by the IPL technical committee. Similarly, Yogesh Nagar of Delhi Daredevils, who also figures on the list, was warned by the umpires for ‘breaking’ his elbow at the time of delivery in the match against Bangalore on Tuesday. Tournament officials decided against making a formal complaint.

“From next year we will ensure that players who are listed as having suspect actions, either by the BCCI or the ICC, will not be a part of the tournament,” an official told The Indian Express on Thursday. Dhiraj Malhotra, IPL tournament director, said that the matter was pending with the BCCI. “They have taken cognisance of the events and will review it in their meeting,” he said.

Strategy break intact

Meanwhile, the IPL council has decided to retain the seven-and-a-half minute strategy breaks during innings. According to sources, broadcasters expressed their displeasure that modifications would result in big revenue losses, forcing a U-turn.
