Subrata Mondal, a resident of Paliagram village in Gopalnagar police station area, was admitted to the hospital around 9.45 am after he was hit by a bus.
According to hospital authorities, his condition became critical around noon and the doctors decided to refer him to a hospital in Kolkata, but his relatives were nowhere to be seen.
The patient died at 1.40 pm and the news of his death reached his family at 3.30 pm. Soon after, irate relatives barged into the doctors’ quarters next to the hospital.
The doctor who treated Subrata was allegedly dragged out of his home and severely beaten up. Meanwhile other relatives of the boy continued to ransack the hospital.
The doctor was rescued by some youths from a nearby club.
The situation was brought under control after police arrived at the spot. Till late evening, locals continued their protests outside the hospital premises.
“We were not informed about any recommendation to shift the patient to Kolkata. Neither were we told about the seriousness of Subrata’s condition. We were not even allowed to see the patient and were asked to come back at 4.00 pm. All of a sudden, we were told that Subrata has died. This is nothing but medical negligence on the part of the hospital staff and the doctor who was treating my nephew,” said Haradhan Bayen, uncle of the patient.
According to the police, the angry mob consisted of relatives of the deceased, some locals and some party workers. “A case has been registered and the matter will be looked into,” said Subhas Sen, SDPO, Bongaon.
