The UT police in collaboration with the Swaran Jayanti Shehkari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will provide training to youngsters Below Poverty Line (BPL), so that they can be employed as part-time security personnel.
Police and MC officials on Friday enrolled 23 youths at the Sector-17 police station, who will be interviewed on Wednesday. The Young Men's Christian Association and Red Cross society are also collaborators in the programme.
Those enrolled will have to undergo a 45-day physical training. They will be taught basic skills of fire and emergency services, and policing.
"Interested people can get themselves registered by December 12," said an MC official.
Sub-Inspector Meher Kaur said, "These people need something to get out of their usual lifestyle. This will put them at a better place in society".
Raj Kumar, a 19-year-old resident of Bapu Dham Colony, said, "I came to know about the course by word of mouth. So, I came along with my friends. I wanted to earn some money and also to get into a government job. They have promised us a stipend of Rs 5,000 initially, which will be raised later".
