Come Tuesday, and Mumbaikars will have to face almost 10 per cent water cut all across the city. Keeping in mind the delay in the expected rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday stated that with lake level dipping,it will have to impose the ten per cent water cut. Earlier on Friday, the civic body had stated that it will wait till June 15 to see the situation. However,on Monday civic officials from the hydraulic department admitted that dipping lake level is indeed a serious situation. Till now we were supplying 3,400 million litres per day (MLD) of water all over the city. But from midnight today, this number has been decreased to 3100 MLD. Thus,it will be about 300 MLD less in the daily water supply, said deputy municipal commissioner (water supply),Pramod Charankar. Mumbai receives its daily supply of water from six lakes: Modak Sagar,Tansa,Vihar,Tulsi,Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa, located on the outskirts and in the city. While the water level of Vihar has reached its lowest,Tansa has water that can be used for the next few days. We expected the first showers by June first week,as this would have risen the lake levels. But since this was not the case,we have to go ahead with the water cut by Tuesday itself, said Charankar. Civic officials maintained that no decision has been taken on how long the water cut will continue. We are just carefully watching the rain situation. Nothing can be said at this juncture when we will end the cut, said Charankar.
