Break-in bid at MSU, no harm to Swami statue

There was an alarm at MS University after some unidentified persons tried to break into one of the store rooms of the sculpture department at the Faculty of Fine Arts where a large statue of Swami Vivekanand is being made.

The break-in attempt had sparked fears that someone might have vandalised the wax mould of the head of Swami Vivekanand's statue that students and faculty members of the department are making as part of an assignment.

The statue will measure 12 feet in height and will be made using 1,600 kg of bronze. It will be placed within the compound of the General Education Centre of the university, now re-named as Swami Vivekanand Bhavan as a tribute to the spiritual leader in his 150th birth anniversary.

University registrar and communication cell head Amit Dholakia, who visited the spot, said the statue was not vandalised as suspected and nothing had been stolen from the store.

"Experts from the sculpture department who are working on the statue said the statue had been cast into different parts that would later be welded into a single large statue. Some persons assumed it was broken by persons attempting the break-in," he said. "We are currently in the process of casting the mould in wax in 22 different pieces ," sculpture department faculty Aqueel Ahmad said.
