Breaking the language barrier

Working in regional films keeps you busy, says Vishaka Singh

After receiving accolades for her sterling performance as the fiery rebel, Pritilata Waddedar in Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, Vishaka Singh had kept a relatively low profile. With no good roles coming her way, Vishaka decided to take a break from the industry and hopped onto the corporate bandwagon. She went back to London and joined her father's company, taking care of the finance department. Perhaps, this step was in a way a precursor to what was to follow.

Unable to keep away from the industry, she found herself inextricably drawn towards co-producing the critically-acclaimed film, The Peddlers, with Anurag Kashyap . "I think I am destined to be a part of the industry. It's just that when I tried to seek work, it did not happen, but when I let go, things started falling into place. Luck also matters," reasons the actor.

The petite actress, who had caught the fancy of South film directors, will be seen in her second Tamil film, Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya, a remake of Chashme Buddoor. While her debut Tamil film Pidichirukku saw her playing a small-town girl, she reprises a similar role in her latest outing too. Produced by Santhanam, who also plays the romantic lead, it is directed by K.S. Manikandan. "In Kanna..., there are three boys trying to woo me. I will be seen riding a Scooty in the film, which is a romcom. The story revolves around the choice of life partner that my character makes through one of the boys."

Vishaka, who had language issues, overcame it in her own style. "Since I do not understand the language, the dialogues appear to me as string of words that have been put together, which I had to memorise and emote. At times not knowing the language becomes a handicap. After working in Kanna..., doing Vikram Bhatt's Ankur Arora Murder Case and Farhan Akhtar's Fukrey is like a cakewalk," she sums.
