Six drown as boats capsize in two Bihar dists

MUZAFFARPUR/MOTIHARI: Six persons drowned and two others went missing in two separate incidents of boats capsizing in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur and East Champaran districts,the police said on Wednesday. A boat,carrying 15 passengers and coming from Ghanshyampur village of Muzaffarpur district,sank in the swollen Lakhandei river,they said adding that while ten of them swam to safety,three drowned and two went missing. In another incident in East Champaran district,three persons drowned when a small boat sank in Machowaman lake on Tuesday,they said. All the bodies have been fished out,the police said.

Shiv Sena too joins protest

MUMBAI: After MNS,the Shiv Sena also joined the protest,promising it will not let commuters be inconvenienced. Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said auto drivers will not be permitted to hold the city to ransom. Auto union leaders,however,stuck to their strike call and said they will take out a morcha to Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s residence.

Taking responsibility for attacks on autos in Bandra and Vile Parle,Raut said party workers will be on the streets to ensure auto drivers don’t refuse rides. “Some people feel they have become strike emperors,but they are under a false impression. We will not let them strike on November 9. They cannot hold the city to ransom,” Raut said.

Militants attack goods train in Assam

HAFLONG: Unidentified militants on Wednesday attacked a goods train and injured its driver near Haflong in N C Hills district,official sources said. The Ultras fired from nearby hills on the train coming from Lumding towards Silchar at a remote place between Lower Haflong and Maigrendisa railway stations,the sources said. The driver of the train of the Northeast Frontier Railway suffered a bullet injury to his leg and was admitted to the Haflong civil hospital. Railway and police officials rushed to the area,they said adding that the identity of the insurgents was yet to be ascertained.

Cancer patient Alka shifted to AIIMS

NEW DELHI: 21-year-old Alka Tiwari,who had appealed to a local court pleading that either the government bear her medical expenses or she be allowed euthanasia,was on Wednesday admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here. The Kanpur-based girl is suffering from blood cancer. “Today,Alka was brought to Delhi and admitted in AIIMS for bone marrow transplant. The health ministry has sanctioned Rs 20 lakh for the treatment of the patient and if required more money will be sanctioned by the Centre,” Jaiswal said.

Woman Maoist’s custody extended

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Wednesday reserved for October 7 its order on a plea by Chhattisgarh Police seeking transit remand of suspected woman Maoist,arrested on Tuesday by the city police here. Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna extended the judicial custody of 36-year-old Soni Sori,who is charged with sedition for allegedly acting as a conduit between Maoists and private firm Essar. Sori also moved the court for bail,saying she should not be handed over to Dantewada police as she feared threat to her life.

Six months’ jail for MLA Pacheco

PANAJI: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Fransisco Pacheco was on Wednesday sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by a local court in connection with a case of assault on a government servant. The former Goa Tourism Minister was chargesheeted for assaulting a Junior Engineer of the Electricity department,Kapil Natekar in 2006.

Maoists fire at cops,snatch carbines

TINSUKIA/SIBSAGAR: Suspected Maoists shot at four Assam Police personnel and snatched their guns at Sadiya in Tinsukia district,police said. On Tuesday,when four policemen of the 19 Battalion,deployed at Ambikagiri border outpost,were returning after their duty,two men fired at them,police said. Two of the policemen sustained bullet injuries. The assailants snatched their carbines and fled,they said.
