British MP advocates clemency for Bhullar
Jalandhar: Stating that his country was against capital punishment in general, British Member Parliament (MP), Simon Hughes, a member of the British Liberal Democratic Parliamentary party, that is the part of ruling coalition in Britain advocated clemency for Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar on Sunday. On a personal visit to the Golden temple after meeting the Dalai Lama, Hughes said he would raise Bhullar's issue at the UN's Human Rights Commission as well as at the International Commission of Jurists. The British MP further said various Sikhs in his country had met him over the issue.
Rohtak-Panipat strech to be four-laned
Chandigarh: The 80-km long road from Rohtak to Panipat will be four laned at a cost of Rs 807 crore. Six bye passes will be constructed along the road at Rohtak, Brahminwas, Jasiya-Ghilor-Rukhi, Mahra, Gohana and Panipat .
65,540 tonnes paddy procured in Haryana
Chandigarh: Six government procuring agencies purchased 65,540 metric tonnes of paddy, on Saturday, the first day of Kharif procurement season. Haryana Food and Supplies Mahender Partap Singh said the Food and Supplies Department had purchased 30,820 metric tonnes of paddy, while HAFED purchased 13,755 metric tonnes. Agro Industries Corporation had purchased 10,503 metric tonnes, CONFED 6,484 metric tonnes and Haryana Warehousing Corporation 3,978 metric tonnes of paddy.
Punjab mid-day meal cooks continue stir
Chandigarh: Demanding minimum wages under the Labour Act, nearly 50,000 women working as mid-day meal cooks in state's government and government-aided schools have warned that they will continue their protest in October. "The honorarium of Rs 1,000 a cook gets works out to be Rs 20 per day on an average after spending 6 to 7 hours daily. It is a central scheme wherein the state has to pitch in 35 per cent share but the Punjab government is not doing so," president of the Mid-Day Meal Cook Front, Punjab, said.
