Badal offers help to tsunami-hit Punjabis
Chandigarh:Nearly 150 to 200 families, mostly of ex-servicemen of Punjabi origin, settled in Campbell Bay, Andamans, are trying to rebuild livelihoods after the 2004 tsunami. Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lt Gen (retd) Bhopindher Singh at a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday evening said the farmers, who had suffered huge losses in terms of lives and property after the tsunami ravaged the island, had decided to stay there owing to their spirit of entrepreneurship. As a goodwill gesture, Badal offered to help these families.
Vigilance arrests ASI in 'graft' case
Chandigarh:State Vigilance Bureau nabbed an assistant sub-inspector of police while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 in Samana block on Thursday. Sukhwinder Singh was allegedly accepting the bribe from complainant Dharm Singh of Paharpur village. Vigilance chief Suresh Arora said the complainant approached the bureau, and alleged that the ASI demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for not arresting him in a case registered against him, despite being granted an anticipatory bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
'Turban' theme at Mr Singh International
Amritsar:Pageant 'Mr Singh International 2012' will focus on the omnipresence of turbans across the globe to drive home the point that turbans are not limited to a particular religion. Advocate Jaswinder Singh, director of Turban Pride Movement, said preparations for the contest were almost complete and 26 contestants would compete on December 16. Olympian Rajpal Singh, singer Gurpreet Singh Rabbi Shergill, among others, will judge the competition.
