Punjab for better ties with Pak

CHANDIGARH:The Punjab Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution seeking to urge the Centre to promote better ties with Pakistan. After the debate on law and order, a resolution moved by Akali Dal MLA Harpreet Singh stated that the House recommends the state government to urge the Centre for concrete steps to ensure the economy development of the country by making concerted efforts which will result in promotion of mutual friendship, peace and amity with Pakistan. The resolution also sought the need to allow uninterrupted pilgrimage to religious places.

BSF seizes 7-kilo heroin at border

Amritsar:BSF personnel on Thursday seized seven packets of contraband, suspected to be heroin, from the Amritsar Sector of the international border. Officials said that a BSF party challenged suspected smugglers, who did not pay any heed and fired three rounds, forcing the personnel to respond. The smugglers, however, managed to escape but the personnel recovered seven packets of heroin.

Patwari dismissed for 'tampering' records

Amritsar:Amritsar District Collector Rajat Aggarwal dismissed Sheikh Bhatti circle patwari Daljit Singh, who is at present posted at Awan Lakha Singh Circle. The patwari, during his posting at Sheikh Bhatti, had allegedly "tampered with revenue records and got illegal girdwaris, owned by the Punjab government ,in the name of his wife, Varinder Kaur, and brother Balwinder Singh's wife Kashmir Kaur. Aggarwal said that an inquiry report submitted in July proved the charges against Singh, who was given a chance of personal hearing on November 29, but he could not produce any documents to prove his innocence.

Amritsar to host first commissioners' meet

Amritsar:The Punjab Police will organise the country's first Conference of Commissioners of Police on December 21 and 22 in collaboration with the Bureau of Police Research and Development. Around 55 delegates are expected to attend the conference. There are 47 commissionerates in the country. Commissioners of Police from 21 commissionerates and representatives from seven commissionerates will attend the conference. Eminent delegates attending the meet include Neeraj Kumar, Delhi Commissioner of Police, and Dr Satya Pal Singh, Mumbai Commissioner of Police.

7th Karm Samman awards instituted

CHANDIGARH:The Haryana Institute of Fine Arts (HIFA) launched the 7th Karm Samman awards on Thursday to recognise life time achievements and contributions made in the fields of art, culture and humanitarianism. The awards are for those from Haryana. They were launched in Karnal in the presence of dignitaries, including Lt Gen (Dr) D D S Sandhu, Vice Chancellor of Kurukshetra University; Rajbir Deswal, IG, CID, Haryana. HIFA is a cultural organisation of north India under the aegis of Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister of Haryana.
