Briefly State : Groundwater level going down by 60 cm every year in Punjab: Bajwa

Congress MP from Gurdaspur,Partap Singh Bajwa on Monday raised the issue of deteriorating groundwater level in Punjab in the Lok Sabha and informed the House that the groundwater use has went up by 89 per cent since the beginning of the Green Revolution.

Chandigarh: Congress MP from Gurdaspur,Partap Singh Bajwa on Monday raised the issue of deteriorating groundwater level in Punjab in the Lok Sabha and informed the House that the groundwater use has went up by 89 per cent since the beginning of the Green Revolution. The National Geophysical Research Institute has found that due to this over-exploitation,the ground water levels are going down by 60 cm every year. Punjab has,in less than 30 years,used up ground water reserves built up over the last 105 years. “In order to reach the water table,farmers are forced to dig deeper into the ground and use more power to pump out the water adding to their over all farm costs. The National Rainfed Area Authority has maintained that if this situation continues in Punjab,desertification is imminent,” he said,adding that the matter concerns national food security and must be given immediate attention.

Kalia meets US ambassador

CHANDIGARH: Former Minister and senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia called on the US Ambassador Albert Peter Burliegh on Monday and urged him to develop a mechanism to verify the financial status of such people who are living in the US and want to marry in India. “There should be mechanism to verify economic credentials of a bride or a groom who wants to marry in India,as in many cases their claims of being economically sound turn out to be false,” Kalia said talking to the media. In the hour-long meeting they discussed a wide range of topics including the political scenario of the state. The US ambassador also met the Punjab Chief Scretary SC Agrawal and Governor Shivraj Patil.

Minor to get money ‘usurped’ by uncle

CHANDIGARH: Coming to the rescue of a minor child whose property,after the death of his parents,was being usurped by his uncle,the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday ordered transfer of the money deposited in the account of his uncle to the account of the minor. Justice Surya Kant passed the directions during the resumed hearing of an anticipatory bail application by one of the relatives of Arjun,the minor child. The relative,Ravi Soi,is accused of usurping the property left in the name of Arjun after his parents passed away. Justice Surya Kant today ordered that an amount of 36 lakh rupees belonging to Arjun shall be immediately transferred in a bank account opened for the minor child.

Mother appeals govt to bring daughter’s body back from Pakistan

AMRITSAR: The mother of Karamjit Kaur,a Punjabi woman who’s body was recovered from Ravi river in Pakistan,appealed to the Indian government to help bring the deceased’s body back from the neighbouring country. Karmajit’s family has alleged that she was killed by her in-laws and her body was thrown into the river. The body of Karamjit,who went missing on November 12,was recovered from near Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Narowal district of Pakistan on November 16.

Sidhu calls Amritsar bandh on December 1

AMRITSAR: BJP national general secretary and Amritsar MP Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday said his party will enforce bandh in Amritsar on December 1,if the UPA government at Centre fails to withdraw its plans allowing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail in India. Sidhu,who led a protest against the FDI at Hall Bazaar,said that the 11 BJP ruled states would not allow FDI in retail.
