KABUL: A roadside bomb killed at least 19 people, mostly women and children, who were on their way to a wedding in Afghanistan's north on Friday, local police officials said. Fourteen more people were wounded in the blast in the Dawlat Abad district of Balkh province, said provincial police spokesman Shir Jan Durani, adding that the Taliban were behind the attack. "They wanted to attend a wedding party in a village ... The bomb was planted by the enemies of Afghanistan," Durani said.

Pak SC orders action against ex-Army chief

Islamabad: Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday ordered the government to take legal action against former Army chief Gen Mirza Aslam Beg and former ISI chief Asad Durrani for distributing millions of rupees among politicians to rig the 1990 general election. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry also said that any "political cell" operating in the presidency, ISI, Military Intelligence or Intelligence Bureau should be shut down immediately as such an institution is unconstitutional.

Savile inquiry growing: UK cops

LONDON: British police on Friday said a highly publicised inquiry into a BBC entertainer believed to have molested dozens of girls has widened to include more than 200 potential victims and possibly new perpetrators.

The Metropolitan Police said it is pursuing over 400 separate lines of inquiry as part of the investigation into the late Jimmy Savile, whose reputation crumbled after one woman after another came forward to allege that he routinely sexually assaulted young girls.
