Egypt swears in 10 new ministers in Cabinet reshuffle
CAIRO: Egypt's government swore in 10 new ministers on Sunday in a Cabinet shake-up aimed at improving the government's handling of the country's struggling economy. The top posts in the reshuffle included that of the Interior Ministry which will be led by Mohammed Ibrahim and Finance Ministry to be led El-Morsi Hegazy. Also included in the reshuffle were the ministries of civil aviation, communication and information technology.
Two women die of H1NI flu in China
Beijing: Two Chinese women have died from the H1N1 flu strain in Beijing in the past 10 days, Chinese state media said Sunday, the first reported deaths from the virus in China's capital since 2010. A 65-year-old cancer patient died on Friday and a 22-year-old migrant worker died on December 27, the Beijing Daily said, citing the city's Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Drunk passenger duct-taped on plane
New York: A passenger aboard a flight to New York was restrained with duct tape by co-passengers after he allegedly attacked a woman and screamed the plane was going to crash, according to media reports. The 46-year-old man was said to have consumed alcohol. He was arrested when Icelandair's New York-bound flight landed at JFK International Airport on Thursday, CBS News said.
President renames Palestinian Authority
RAMALLAH: President Mahmoud Abbas Sunday ordered his government to officially change the name of the Palestinian Authority to "State of Palestine." The move follows the November decision by the UN to upgrade the Palestinians' status to that of a "non-member observer state." Abbas said that all official Palestinian stamps and documents will now bear the new name.
Suicide bombers kill 5 in Afghanistan
KANDAHAR: Two suicide bombers penetrated a government compound in Spin Boldak district in Kandahar province Sunday, killing five people, Afghan officials said. District chief Mohammad Hashim said the two attackers arrived in a car, killed a guard and blew themselves up.
