WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama was named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2012, citing his historic re-election last month as symbolic of the nation's changing demographics amid the backdrop of high unemployment and other challenges. Time editor Rick Stengel announced the choice on NBC's "Today" program on Wednesday.

Israel approves 1,000 homes in West Bank

JERUSALEM: Israel has given final approval to 1,000 new homes for Israelis in Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Ariel Rosenberg, spokesman for the Ministry of Housing and Construction, said the housing units are among 3,000 new settlement homes Israel promised to build in in response to the Palestinians' bid for upgraded status at the United Nations in last month.

Hindu trader kidnapped in Pak

Islamabad: A Hindu trader was kidnapped by unidentified armed men in Quetta city of southwest Pakistan Wednesday, police said. The trader, Roop Chand, was on way home from his shop when four armed men intercepted him on Arif Street in Quetta and took him away at gunpoint, police officials said. Police have launched an operation to trace Chand.

3 US officials resign after Benghazi report

WASHINGTON: An administration official said the chief of the State Department's security service, Eric Boswell, one of his deputies and an official from the agency's Middle East bureau have resigned after a damning report that found systematic management failures responsible for a lack of security at the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.
