Iran hangs member of Sunni rebel group

TEHRAN: Iran has executed a member of the Jundollah Sunni rebel group, which has been blamed for a series of attacks including one last month that killed 40 people, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Tuesday. Abdolhamid Rigi was hanged in a prison in the city of Zahedan on Monday, Fars quoted a senior police official as saying. Rigi had been convicted of various charges, including moharebe or staging war against God, punishable by death sentence under Iran’s Islamic law.

17 killed in Karachi train collision

KARACHI: At least 17 people were killed and over 40 injured on Tuesday following a collision between a passenger train and a goods train after its driver missed a signal on the outskirts of this Pakistani port city. Officials said the Karachi-bound Allama Iqbal Express rammed into the Super Parcel Express near Jumma Goth railway station. Railways officials said the accident occurred because the driver of Allama Iqbal Express missed a signal and hit the cargo train from the rear.

China launches Uighur crackdown

BEIJING: A ‘strike hard’ campaign has been launched by the police in China’s Xinjiang Uighur autonomous region with authorities cracking down on terrorism and stepping up hunt for suspects responsible for this year’s deadly ethnic riots. The campaign is to run from November through the end of the year and will cover all areas of the remote province, Xinhua said, quoting a statement issued by regional public security ministry. Hundreds of Uighurs have been arrested and nine youths sentenced to death after being convicted in the riots.
