United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron will visit Kolkata on November 14,becoming the second from the country to land in the capital after John Major came here 16 years ago.
Even though the final details have not been worked out,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee may meet the visiting dignitary during his 7-hour-long stay. The meeting will take place and the details are being worked out, a state government official said.
After US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,Cameron becomes the second important foreign dignitary whom Mamata will meet since coming to power in May 2011.
Cameron,who will arrive at 2.30 pm on Thursday,will first visit the All India Radio for an interview by representatives of both AIR and BBC. Later,the prime minister will go to the Indian Institute of Management,Joka,to interact with with students there.
Cameron is also said to pay visit to Indian Museum besides meeting with representatives of an NGO.
Sources have informed that it was Cameron who expressed keenness to meet Mamata as the British government is interested in expanding business opportunities in the eastern region of the country. The CM herself said she has always cherished the dream of turning Kolkata into London.
The British government has been actively involved in the industrial reconstruction of the state with its foreign offices wing – Department for International Development – having provided money for the rehabilitation of workers who lost jobs during the reconstruction process of the sick public sector units.
