Broadcast body bars Sony from airing gangrape re-enactment

Sony Entertainment Television will not be able to telecast special episodes re-enacting the Delhi gangrape in its popular crime-based show for now as the Broadcast Content Complaints Council, the self-regulatory body for non-news TV channels, has restrained it from airing the episodes until the verdict in the case is pronounced by the trial court.

The BCCC did not find "anything objectionable" in the episodes on account of breach of privacy but felt the show pronounced the accused guilty and demanded maximum punishment for them.

"The show is clearly based on the prosecution story only. There is defence side of the story also," BCCC ruled. "Whether prosecution's version should be accepted or not is to be decided by the court."

The episodes, which were to be aired on January 11 and 12 on Crime Patrol-Dastak, had run into trouble as soon as the channel started airing the promos with the I&B ministry asking it not to telecast them.
