In what could raise concerns in the Broadcasting industry, the I&B ministry on Monday stated in Parliament that the controversial Broadcasting Bill is still under consideration.
Minister of State in the I&B Ministry C M Jatua said, in reply to a question in the Parliament, that the proposed Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill is being examined in ‘consultation with various stakeholders including the state government’. The minister added that the draft Bill proposes the creation of a Broadcasting Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) for broadcasting services. He added that ‘regulation and monitoring of content is one of the major functions to be performed by the regulator’. Broadcasters have been strongly opposing the proposed Bill and content regulation plans.
