Following yesterday’s Delhi’s power demand peak at 4,337 MW, BSES today sourced around 220 MW of additional power from power exchange, Karnataka and Sikkim. As an added boon, the 138 MW that Mumbai and Uttarakhand were to provide as per an agreement also came in.

The power situation in Delhi had crumbled leading to public outrage in last few days, which forced discoms to buy more electricity. 

Officials said today’s power consumption was normal. “The peak demand of 3,869 MW at 12.52 pm was successfully met and there were no reported incidents of outages on account of loadshedding in BSES areas except a few complaints in some areas due to low frequency, planned shutdowns and some local faults,” said a BSES press statement.

In Najafgarh, residents complained of outages of up to six hours because of a local fault involving the BSES and the Delhi Transco. Mehrauli residents reported abrupt outages of four hours. In East Delhi, where large pockets have reeled under powercuts of 12 hours last week, outages of nearly five hours were reported in a few colonies.

“The frequency of faults has reduced but the time taken to repair them has to be cut down further. We are monitoring the company’s performance closely,” an official said.

Meanwhile, the government and power distribution companies are relieved with the arrival of the monsoon.

“The city was hit by heat wave of such intensity after 13 years and the delay in monsoon only added to the problem. The demand for electricity too shot up drastically touching over 4,000 MW this year from around 1,900 MW a decade ago,” said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
