BSF has shot dead a militant trying to infiltrate into India from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir under cover of Pakistani firing, the third ceasefire violation by rangers of the neighbouring country in six days' time.
A group of three to four intruders entered into Indian territory along the international border in Kunara Tana Khurd forward area in R S Pura belt of Jammu district late on Thursday night, additional Deputy Inspector General (ADIG), (Intelligence) of the BSF, J B Sagwan said.
They were challenged by the BSF troops deployed along the borderline, he said, adding that there was firing from the Pakistani troops on the Korotana Khurd post to give cover to militants thereby violating the ceasefire.
BSF troops fired back resulting in a gunfight he said, adding that one intruder was shot dead, while the others escaped back to Pakistan area's Ditch cum bandh (DCB).
The body of the intruder has been recovered, he said.
This is the third firing in the past six days by Pakistan army, which gave active support to the militants in their bid to enter India, he said.
"No damage was caused to the border fencing by the militants as they failed to reach it due to the BSF action," Sagwan said.
The militants tried to enter into India from Mali Anandnaga post of Pakistan which is opposite to India's Karotona Khurd post.
There was no loss of life or damage on this side in the firing incident, the ADIG said.
