A BSP leader was shot as he sat on the dais during a party rally in Gonda on Wednesday.
Hanuman Sharan Shukla,a zila panchayat member,was shot in the head from close range. He died on way to hospital. The police are yet to make any arrest.
The incident took place near the district collectorate around 4 pm,in presence of a large number of police and Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel. A .12 bore countrymade pistol was recovered from the spot.
DIG,Devipatan Range,Y K Pachauri said,We are trying to ascertain the motive.
On Wednesday,the BSP was holding its statewide demonstrations against the Womens Reservation Bill. Shukla was from Mahangipurva of Gonda district. He had joined the BSP before the 2007 Assembly elections. He had joined as part of the partys new Brahmin-Dalit formula, said a party leader.
