A student of Galgotia University was killed and four others injured when their car crashed into a stationary bus in the early hours of Tuesday on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.
Police said Mihir Tomar (21), a first-year BTech student at Galgotia University died in the accident. Three others, Abhishek Pathak (21), Amit Goel (20), and Prakhar (21), all students at the same college sustained injuries. Shahbez Khan, a student of Noida International University, was also injured, police said.
According to police, the condition of Goel, who is in the ICU, is critical. The other injured are stable.
Police said that the incident took place around 3 am on Tuesday. "The Ford Fiesta was being driven by Tomar, and Shahbez was sitting in the front. Near Noida, there was a stationery bus on the road. The students failed to spot the bus and crashed into it at a high speed. The vehicle had no airbags. Though the five were rushed to Kailash Hospital, Tomar was declared dead on arrival. They were travelling from Greater Noida to Noida," a senior police officer said.
Quoting eyewitnesses, police said the bus was parked in the middle of the road. "Apparently, the bus had developed a mechanical problem and stalled in the middle of the road. The bus driver was nowhere to be seen. We are checking on his whereabouts. We are also waiting for Tomar's post-mortem report to see if he driving under influence. A case of negligent driving has been registered at the Sector 39 police station. The damaged car and the bus have been impounded," the officer said.
