Bureaucrat drives off Lucknow’s first Nano

The world’s cheapest car was designed by Tata to fit the middle-class pocket. But the fame of Nano is drawing people much better-off to it.

On Friday,Umesh Chandra Mittal,an IAS officer, became the proud owner of Lucknow’s first Nano. Already an owner of a Lancer,Mittal said,“what attracted me to Nano was its big brand, world fame and cheap price”. “Everybody, not just in India but abroad too,is talking of this car. Out on the road, people are actually ogling at my car and I am enjoying the attention,” said Mittal.

The car had attracted him even when Tata was facing trouble in its production and the vehicle has received appreciation across the globe, said Mittal, who works in Kanpur while his family stays in Lucknow. He has bought the car for his family,he said, and his daughter “is thrilled by the purchase”. “Though we have a car,we needed a small car for local movement. At Rs 1 lakh,a family car which can accommodate all four of us,is fuel efficient and carries the Tata brand name is more than we can ask for.”

The Mittal family was given the keys to their ‘Lunar Silver’ model by Goldrush Motors, the Tata Motor Dealers in Lucknow. Two others,Atul Pratap Singh Chandel from Lucknow and Dev Ram from Rae Bareilly, also received their keys in the ceremony.

“This is my first car and I could afford it because of its wonderful price,” said Ram,the owner of the first Nano in Rae Bareilly, who, too, bought a ‘Lunar Silver’ Nano for his six-member family. Chandel has chosen a ‘Sunshine Yellow’ Nano for himself.
