Robbers on Sunday struck the house of a police inspector in Valsad who had died in a road accident two days ago and decamped with cash, jewellery and a pistol.
The inspector was posted in Rajkot. His family members were in their native place of Patan for his last rites when the theft took place in their house in Valsad where they stayed.
According to police, Mahesh Nayak, the deceased, was posted with special branch of Rajkot police and had died in a road accident near Limdi in Ahmedabad on Friday. Nayak had earlier served in Valsad.
Nayak's wife Kalpana and son Nilay, after hearing the news of his death, had rushed to Ahmedabad on Friday asking their neighbour Janak Desai to take care of their house. Nayak's body was later taken to Patan for last rites.
On Sunday morning, Janak Desai found the main lock in Nayak's house broken.
