Bus driver remanded in 5-day police custody

Ram Singh, the driver of the bus involved in the Munirka gangrape case, was sent to five-day police custody by a city court on Tuesday.

He was arrested on Monday, a day after the incident.

The investigating officer (IO) in the case has told the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Namrata Aggarwal that the police needed Singh's custody to help nab "two or three remaining accused" who have fled to UP, Rajasthan and Bihar.

The investigating officer also told the court that they would need to take Ram Singh to various parts of the three states to search for the remaining accused.

Police have also said he was required to identify his clothing from the time of the incident and for the recovery of the mobile phone and ATM cards of the victims, which were taken away by the accused.

Ram Singh's brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, an assistant gym instructor and Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller, who were arrested by the police on Tuesday, will be produced in court on Wednesday morning.

Singh, who has refused to undergo a Test Identification Parade (TIP) to determine his identity, was produced before the court with his face covered with a white cloth.

When asked by the court whether he wanted to undergo TIP, Singh declined and signed a form stating that he did not wish to take part in the procedure.

"Since the accused is required for apprehending the other persons involved in the crime, for identification of his clothes and also for the recovery of the mobile phone and ATM cards of the complainants/victims, Ram Singh is remanded in five-day police custody," the magistrate said. He will now be produced before the court for further proceedings on December 23.

Police also told the court that all the accused have been booked under Sections 307, 376(2)(g), 377, 365, 394 read with Section 34 of the IPC for attempted murder, gangrape, unnatural sex, kidnapping, wrongful confinement and robbery.
