‘Business — more than government or civil society — is equipped to lead us towards a sustainable world’

  • In India, companies have to think how they can be unique. Indian companies are in a better position to do all of this. In the coming two decades we are going to see whole new industries born, and whole new global corporations 15 to 20 years from now that we haven’t even heard of today will be large, dominant firms. And large, dominant firms of today will not be around.

Is it not the job of government to deal with poverty?

Now government lags behind. Corporates are demanding from governments that they act in the area of climate change. Corporates are in a prime position to stake out the future and bring 4.5 billion people into the capital market. I take the contrarian view that business — more than either government or civil society — is uniquely equipped at this point in history to lead us toward a sustainable world in the years ahead. Corporations are the only entities with the technology, resources, capacity, and global reach required. And corporations of tomorrow have to stake out their position today.
