‘Buying,not renting fitness units’

After several questions being raised on exorbitant prices at which overlays like fitness equipment were being procured on rent for 45 days, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee has gone on the defensive.

After several questions being raised on exorbitant prices at which overlays like fitness equipment were being procured on rent for 45 days, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee has gone on the defensive.

On Wednesday, the Committee claimed they were not renting any of the fitness equipment and were instead buying them, which explains the high costs. “The cost of many of these items also includes installation as well as operation and maintenance which is close to 15-20 per cent of the total cost price,” spokesperson Lalit Bhanot told reporters here. He was accompanied by A K Saxena, the Committee’s joint DG.

The explanation comes after media reports said the prices of several items were astounding. “We have also requested various government organisation including the DMRC,Engineers India Limited,CPWD and CVC to provide us with a team for quantity and quality check of overlays,” Bhanot said. He denied they had ordered for computers and washing machines as reported.

‘Well,we have a justification’
TREADMILLS:
Media reports said the OC is reportedly renting treadmills for Rs 9.75 lakh. The organisers, however, claim the treadmills are no longer part of the overlays deal. “We decided that instead of renting the fitness equipment we shall buy it as part of the Games legacy,” Bhanot said. “These are profession treadmills and cost $60,000. You cannot expect to give athletes normal treadmills,” he said.

TOILET PAPER: The OC clarified that the cost of each toilet paper roll they were buying was coming to around Rs 37. They were purchasing 100 packets of these rolls for Rs 3,750.

AIR-CONDITIONERS: The OC is hiring 11-tonne air-conditioners. “These are not your usual home ACs. An 11-tonne AC is unusual and moreover the cost includes mounting arrangements, air ducts, cabling, power back-up,operation and maintenance,” Bahnot explained.  The OC is hiring ACs for anything between Rs 70,000 to Rs 1.87 lakh.

REFRIGERATORS: The OC contested reports that refrigerators were being hired at Rs 42,202 each. They claimed a 110-litre refrigerator costs an average of Rs 7,958 and the OC was spending Rs 1.2 crore on 1,518 units.
